Select your child’s simple drawing, like the one to the left. Step Two: Design

Here is a close up of a dog face that I painted in a recent design. For those of you that do not own pets, this is the perfect addition to your family. Looks cute, doesn't shed or need house training, never barks at guests, and collects lots of compliments. Animal faces can be very expressive and bring realism into a mural design. As you can see from this site and my portfolio photos, animals are a specialty of my mural designs and help bring personality to a room.

A Banner Design

There are many ways to personalize the look of a space with a mural. This banner announces the room's residents in grand style. I have done other banner designs to fit a variety of themes include aviation, "Under the Sea," and even "Harry Potter." These are great elements on a focal point wall or over a doorway.

Reimaging Everything!

As part of the jungle room design, I reimagined everything in light of the theme, including the wall lighting. Note how some clever embellishments and peaking feathered friends, can transform a standard wall sconce into a bird's nest. This just goes to prove that murals are not just for walls, but should encompass other elements of the room to create an immersive environment of play and fun!

Words to the Wise

Although a picture is worth a thousand words, often my clients want to include a quote, scripture, or a child's name in their mural design. Here is one such example. As you can see the words integrate into the design with buzzing insects and a colorful rainbow.

Here are some ideas for things you may want me to "write" with a mural:

The names of your favorite vineyards in a wine cellar scene
A child's name written in script and embelleished with flowers in a bedroom.
The words "Splish, Splash" next to a family of frolicking ducks in a child's bathroom.
The latin words for fruits, vegetables, or flowers featured in a kitchen mural (perhaps on the wall above a stove or sink as a focal point for the room)
A scripture or favorite poem above a crib in a baby's room.
Inspirational words like "Believe," "Simplify," or "Carpe Diem" in a home office design.

Oh Bother!

So, your child or grandchild is a huge fan of Winnie the Pooh and wants to have a 100 acre woods right in their own bedroom.

For a nursery at the University Church of Christ in Abilene, Texas I designed a Pooh-inspired mural using puffy clouds, buzzing honey bees, and of course a "Hunny" pot or two. This is not the first one of this style I have completed, as it is a favorite in baby's rooms and play rooms. Combined with your own officially-licensed Winnie the Pooh accessories, this room will give you a "rumbin' in your tummy."

There are too many details to show here, but this theme lends itself to accents (like the picture shown which was near the baseboard at the door) or full emmersive environments complete with 100 acre wood landscapes, a "Pooh-sticks" bridge, and tree house.

You can see how this design was pulled into the adjacent powder room.

A Tall Welcome

This mural provides a welcome to little visitors in a church children's wing. It would be equally at home at a school or a kids room. The sign could say the child's name or other message.

Ducks are such a darling addition to a children's room. They are friendly and equally appropriate for little boys and girls.

In this Jonah-themed room, I painted from the perspective of the overbord prophet.

Underwater themes are great as they are so versatile. They fit bedrooms, bathrooms, and classroooms. They can be realistic or cartoon-style. They can be adapted for the fishing enthusiast or the scuba diver.

This mural is in a classroom at University Church of Christ in Abilene, Texas. See the bottom of the boat along the ceiing.

Chipmunks Chomping

Oh my!

The only murals that people often think of are the "cutsey" girls rooms (with flowers and castles) or the Tuscany-inspired wine motifs. But there is so much more than can be done - if you dare!

Murals can help introduce children to exotic locations in a school. They can create environments that encourage creativity. They can start conversations. They can draw a crowd (particularly useful in retail locations where I have painted permanent displays).

This tiger was a mural re-work that I did at Rainbow Bible in Abilene, Texas and I can't resist giving you the before and after view of the tiger's face. See the detail in the tiger eyes that make it appear like it is actually looking at you (whether it is contemplating eating you for lunch is up your imagination). Flutter of Butterflies

This flutter of butterfiles would be at home in a school, church, or your home. One of my favorite effects, is to put butterfly accents all over a home, in unexpected places (like above light switches, resting on handrails, etc). It ties a living area together and adds conversation starters all over your home or business. It is also a great way to unify color schemes through the space.

Accents like thus can work in any decorating style, although Asian-inspired designs and those in a Craftsman style lend themselves to themes from nature.

Adding a little "fairy dust" and some fantasy-inspired hues of purple and pink, make butterflies a natural in a nursery or little girls room.

Cute Critters

Even a room with a large-scale mural needs clever details. Here are some cute critters that were part of a classroom mural at First Baptist Church in Baird, Texas. I hope they make your smile and make you think of places in your home, school, or business where you could use a bit of whimsy.

I especially love how both the butterfly and grasshopper appear to be realistic from afar, but when viewed up close their personality shines through.

Mural Make-Over

I have some new mural photos to share that are a bit different than other projects I have done. Rainbow Bible Preschool in Abilene, Texas, had commissioned another artist to do some animal accents at their facility. They decided to change the wall color in these areas and hired me to "cut in" the wall color. I couldn't resist doing some enhancements to the original murals in no time they were having me "rework" the existing murals at the school. The feedback from the staff, parents and students has been incredible as these animals have come to life on the walls of the school.

I love doing work at schools, churches, and community centers as the art is shared with a larger audience and a great, immersive mural can really create the right environment for learning.

What you see here are "before and after" pictures of the murals. I hope this inspires you to not "live with" a mural project gone wrong. I would love the opportunity to enhance or rework a mural that you may already have that is not quite what you had in mind. Often the ideas from a small mural accent can lend themselves to 360-degree environments, as you often see in my work.

Merry Christmas!

For the first time ever, you can purchase Rebecca Hull Christmas cards. They feature the image to the right of the baby Jesus "asleep on the hay." The rich shades of blue are a crisp contrast to the heavy white card stock. The inside reads: "Wishing you a peaceful holiday season and a joyous new year!" Those are the thoughts that come to mind when you see this latest mural done in a master bedroom. The monochrome foliage is soothing against the solid wall and flowers add a splash of color and shimmer. Notice the tiny frog detail.

Walls that Pop!

The distant shadow on this butterfly makes it appear to be hovering off the wall. These kind of optical illusions keep your guests and your family guessing!

Lush Foliage

This photo shows the details on a vineyard. The grape clusters and lush greenery and supplemented by a tiny spider web and other elements to add realisism and interest. These are the kind of murals in which you and your guests will constantly see new things.

The shadowed leaf you see to the right is an element that is repeated in this home. Down their central staircase, I extended a gust of falling leaves and soaring birds following the curve of the stairway walls. This ties the upstairs design with an autumn-colored family room at the base of the stairs. I mention this because stairways are traditionally tricky places to decorate, as they often are passage ways between different areas of the home with their own unique style. This is one creative way to bridge that gap and use murals to create a sense of flow from room to room. Show me your problem area and we can come up with a solution that might just turn it into your favorite part of your home!

Purple Mountain Majesty

In a dining room alcove, I painted an Oregon vineyard with Mt. Hood towering in the background. You can see that I extended the image beyond the edge of the alcove to take advantage of the natural depth and to bring the viewer in. Notice the animal detail (birds, lady bugs) and how can you miss the mountain!

A note about alcoves: These are great places for murals! Whether they be buffet alcoves in a dining room, accent shelves in a hallway, or recessed areas in a vaulted living room, these areas already have dimension and attention. Hand-painted murals give you and your guests something to pay attention to!

It's all in the details!

I just finished a series of murals at a beautiful new home in Amity, Oregon. This bird highlights the details that make hand-painted murals unique works of art. This species was chosen because the colors compliment the palette of the room and coordinate with the other elements I was adding. Birds make an excellent theme for a room or a strking accent.

Objects May Be Larger Than They Appear

These tiny accents illustrate the kind of whimsical additions that attract a ton of attention. The shrimp is on the lightswitch of a sea-themed bathroom. The ladybug is in a kitchen and looks so realistic! Colors that Fly Off the Wall

This detail shows the use of holographic paint. It adds sparkle and interest to this simple design. I often use metallic, glitter, sparkle and the like in all sorts of designs: from "girly-girl" kids rooms to this living area with a more sophisticated style.

Bamboo and Butterflies

This mural shows a Asian-inspired, minimalist design that was perfect for this client's beautiful home which already featured a bold color palette and accessories.

The bamboo stand was painted in the stairwell against a subtle green shade. An attractive welcome to guests coming in the front door. Colorful butterflies were added throughout the space, contributing a punch of color and a touch of sophisticated whimsy.

This design draws from Japanese ink painting techniques (in the Sumi-e tradition).

Painting with Personality

This little bug climbed up a cabinet in the garden design I completed at a church (see previous posts for details). It is little touches like this that add character and interest to a room. They can be put on the walls or on furniture. They can be silly (like this guy) or serious. I have done fairies, butterflies, ladybugs, dragonflies, and a host of other creatures.

Note the shadows under his legs which make him look very realistic, despite his funny grin.

Virtual Reality

Although mural accents are great ways to enhance your decorative style, there is nothing like a 360-degree wall that spans all four walls and the ceiling. Talk about serious "wow" factor!

In this design, I started with a sea blue room, added fish and bubbles in various textures and finishes to add visual depth. Around every corner there was something new (a school of fish, a bubble, a wave across a bookshelf, a big fish, an octopus). A big mural project gives the opportunity to see something new every time you walk into the room!

I have done 360-degree murals in a variety of themes and have lots of pictures in my portfolio. I'd love to talk to you about a project of this sort and we can transform an entire room into a new environment!

Do you have to kiss a frog?

This bathroom design proves that a little goes a long way when it comes to murals. A few accents (a frog on the sink, some cat tails, etc) turn this bathroom from drab to fantastic!

Although this one was for a children's bathroom at a church, the cat tails design can a handsome accent in a den or dining room (highlighted with a dragonfly accent, of course).

Honey, I shrunk the students!

This room is a children's classroom at a church in Baird, Texas. The oversized plants and bugs give the kids a sense that they are part of creation. The room is a 360-degree scene, set off against a bright yellow backdrop. There are dozens of unique details in this room from lady bugs and ants, a whole rainbow across the sky, and even a huge dandelion with "wishes" blowing in the wind across two walls of the room. This design would be awesome in a kids room, playroom, or bathroom. However, a big space would show off the scale of the flowers! Garden goes Gargantuan!

Painterly arrangement

This arrangement is darling with pink and blue flowers with a tag with girls' names on it. So sweet! The girls were "over the moon" about the sparkles in the middle of each flower.

Posh Poodle

A painted, pretty Phrench pink poodle - particularly posh. (I know French doesn't start with a "ph", but I was on a roll). Sparkles on its collar, purple bow and leash, and pink puffs of fur make this one special accent (for two special girls, ages 3 and 5). The leash is "tied" to the towel rack. The inspiration for this design was from a decorative hatbox.

Bedroom for a Groovy Girl

I just finished up a fun series of accents in a little girls' room. Big flowers, lots of sparkle, and ribbons tie in to the decorations in the room and the bright wall colors that her Mom had already chosen. The big flowers extend onto the ceiling and have lots of sparkle!

Go Fish!

Underwater designs are showing up in bathrooms and bedrooms all over the country. A few years ago, I painted a 360-degree mural featuring tropical fish. Little did I know that the fish I selected would go on to star in Disney/Pixar's Finding Nemo movie! Since that first mural, I have done numerous "under the sea" rooms. Fish, as I have found, are equally at home in sophisticated beach-themed rooms or in a kid-friendly designs.

Cougress

This cougar was done in Oregon but is also going to be used as inspiration for a mascot mural I am set to do in October. You might not be able to see in the photos, but I painted a lot of tiny hairs all over the face, it is really detailed, a magnificent animal.

Everybody Duck!

This sketch of a duck was completed as part of a bid for a private pre-school in Abilene, Texas. They had requested realistic animals with a high "cuteness-factor." As you can see in the sketch, I emphasized the eyes and you can see this little guy's personality coming through. Although this design was envisioned as part of an immersive environment (which would include a pond, cat tails and other vegetation, and sky), it could also be done as a small accent near the sink in a powder room or in a children's room.

Tuscany Scenes Stealing the Scene!

I have painted a lot of scenes of Tuscany recently. It is popular for wine cellars, dining rooms, and living areas where my clients want a touch of the outdoors and beautiful weather they can count on (after all, I can paint a permanently sunny day).

When you choose a mural of this type, you can select the size and location, the elements in the scene (mountains, vineyards, etc), the time of day, and the depth of the window sill. I have painted other window sills that have a bunch of grapes and a landing Monarch butterfly. There are lots of options, but never fear. I can walk you through your choices and prepare a sketch to help you decide!

Precious Moments - Jonah and Fish

I unvieled the children's classrooms and nursery at the First Baptist Church of Baird (Baird, Texas) on July 17th after an extreme makeover! What started as some plain and neglected children's areas, was transformed into a Bible storyland.

The nursery is done in a Precious Moments-style Noah's Ark theme. The 2-year old classroom is done in an underwater Jonah theme with plenty of bubbles and fish.

With donations from local businesses and some discount store hunting, I was able to outfit each classroom with new books, toys, craft supplies, and snacks. The members of the congregation were overjoyed and surprised by the rooms. They are now prepared to expand their children's ministries and to reach out to the community!
